Yes, St Anthony’s is the tallest midget on the circus. Now that we got that established can we move on?

I don't think so...All the top 2022 year players are public school kids and St. A's doesn't really take too many underclassmen on Varsity. Think there was only one 10th grader last year.

Just stop. If you're hoping someone will say nice things about your kid then be prepared for her to be to trashed as well. Teenagers shouldn't be discussed other than to post a list of who makes all state or whatever.

The St Anthony's dad posted something similar on another thread, so he's a perfect example of how not to behave as a parent

All the Fury B players who go to St A think they're making Varsity, might be the first in many $hi+ sandwiches they're going to eat. Wait till they get 10 mins a game at Fury and don't get rostered for some games. They need some humble pie. Then Schmidt will tell them what great futsal players they are.

How refreshing an anonymous parent speaks so highly of children attending a Catholic school. I wonder if they kiss there own kids with those lips. High school parents at there best.

I can't speak to the quality of the players as I don't know them, but sheer mathematics makes it unlikely.
St. A's Varsity carried 29 players last year-
12-2019 players
16-2020 players
1-2021 player

JVA carried 25 players last year-
21-2021 players
4-2022

The fact that 12 players graduated but their are 21 rising Juniors is going to make it tough for any Sophomore to make Varsity, especially if they weren't on JV "A" last year (which I don't think they were). Regardless, good luck to all the kids-wishing them all a healthy, injury free, successful season!

Maybe...but my daughter is on the team, so at least there's a legit reason for the interest, lol.
Ps-last year's rosters are on the website, so the info is pretty readily available.

Possible but unlikely...
Smithtown West was the least affected in terms of losing productive players to graduation, same with Half Hollow Hills West. Sachem East lost 2 biggies and moved up in the rankings.

Do people really care about high school ball where talent is drastically different across the team?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 08/29/19 02:35 AM
Do people really care about club ball where “talent” pays to play?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 08/29/19 02:26 PM
Agreed! A small % of Parents pay to get their kid ( and themselves) onto
A travel team. Think about how few teams are discussed the older your kid got on these blogs.

Everyone craps on town teams or leagues like LIJ where the kids have
Something called “fun” and don’t worry about who went to what ID camp.

School ball involves community, fun, rivalries, and simply playing with
What your town offers. And helping a less talented teammate out is the purpose!

The flip side is the nonsense of these travel teams where everyone argues
About which Club or Trainer is worse. Comical
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 08/29/19 03:26 PM
I am sure paying your way onto most of the ECNL/DA teams
Thinks you are now certified “talented”. Keep writing the checks.

The bottom 1/3 of those rostered are essentially High School
Soccer level talented and that is why very few of those travel teams do well
Once they play off of LI.

This is a general question as this is my daughter is new to high school ball. My daughter made varsity but they are moving her from her club position as striker to center midfielder where she has no experience. She is the strongest finisher on the team. She is fine playing the new position and it could make her more versatile but wondering why they would move her?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 08/31/19 05:27 PM
My daughter plays center back on her ECNL club and in high school has played 6-7 positions the last four years. It has made my daughter better and gave her the opportunity to have fun, play somewhere different on the field and develop different skills. On the college level we have seen many players moved out of positions like this also. Whatever the team needs...

In college you’ll find that many coaches recruit a huge number of midfielders, inside and outside. My daughter was a striker for 5 years in club. After getting limited time as a freshman she was converted to a left outside back. Coach was looking for a lefty foot who could overlap from the back and had the speed to make to make long runs to the offensive end of the field. She loves it and sees more touches and action than ever before. Look at Crystal Dunn on USWNT. Plays D on National team and Mid for NC Courage

I think everyone understands that the talent and the level of play is less but it’s representing your school or maybe a headline in the paper or playing with friends they don’t play with on club team. Basically Hs kids being HS kids.

There was something missing for Brianna Jablonowski.

After playing for St. Anthony’s junior varsity team as a freshman, Jablonowski opted to play for a United States Soccer Developmental Academy team as a sophomore.

But Jablonowski missed the comradery that comes with playing soccer for her school, and applied for waiver to play for both her academy team and the St. Anthony's varsity team. The academy granted her request, and the Centerport native helped guide the Friars to their second straight CHSAA state championship last season as a junior.

"I really pushed to get that because the year I didn’t play, I kind of missed out on not only the winning, but the fun that comes with high school soccer,” Jabłonowski said. “So that really made me want to switch.”

The University of Virginia commit had 20 goals and six assists last season, including two goals each in the state semifinal and state championship wins.

“She’s a tremendous athlete, fit as anything, and very agile,” St. Anthony's coach Sue Alber said. “She’s very strong and uses her body well when she goes to the ball and she’s just tactically better than most girls at this age.”

Jablonowski was a welcomed addition by Alber last season, supplying another dangerous scorer to an already deep team.

“I think she realizes there’s a lot of positives that come out of high school ball,” Alber said. “Maybe, I think, she realizes she can be in an environment where she is a superstar and the go-to player and she can improve on being a better leader.”

Jablonowski’s skills go beyond just the ability to put the ball in the back of the net. She was one of 40 players in the country selected to play in the Allstate All-American Cup in Orlando, Florida, this summer. This season, Jablonowski will split time between midfield and forward, in part due to her exceptional foot skills that will even make Alber sit back in awe at times.

“Even players at practice are like, ‘What did you just do?’ " Alber said. “She’s very good with the ball at her feet and I think that will be a huge asset with her game this year.”

Jablonowski even surprises herself at times.

“I guess it’s just years of practice and training and really loving the game,” she said. “You want to do it and learn, so it’s just exploring I guess.

“I’m just like, ‘Wow, that worked,’ ” she added with a laugh. “I just hope it works mostly.”

St. Anthony’s graduated a strong senior class, including Brianna Passaro, who was Newsday’s player of the year, but the Friars feature a talented senior core in Samantha Adams, Nicole Gordon, Kaitlyn Mahoney, and Victoria Mule, along with Jablonowski.

“We want to try to repeat what we did last year,” said Jablonowski, a Newsday All-Long Island selection last season. “We have a lot of new girls coming in, we graduated a lot of seniors, and we want to remember their legacy and do the same thing.”

Just curious , how did Newsday pick 20 players to watch ? Must have been over 100

It's over in the blink of an eye! Almost none will get waivers and few will be recruited to top programs either

es as the other posters have said the Hs team plays kick and run soccer. My kid is enjoying playing Hs with her friends and is embracing playing out of position to improve her game and do what the team needs but not happy about the k&run which she left behind the town when she moved on to club soccer. the k&r is killing her energy wise and she is not being used effectively as she’s running up and down the field without purpose and the team is not looking to maintain possession.

So here's my two cents as a former coach and one who is still involved with the game. She should be herself. Don't get sucked into being a "boot it" player. Use this as a time to try different things to improve herself, i.e. play out of position, get good touches. Just don't get sucked into the HS style of just booting the ball. Stay smart.

Spoken like a true parent. When you hear the perspective of your daughter (and her friends) about playing high school soccer and then read on this board about what parents think it is very different. They will play whatever style works for the team to win. They are not looking to build from the back because the level of talent is not there at every position to put 3-4 passes together. It reminds me of the early days on the town teams when you put the fastest players up top and the biggest kids in the back to play kick & run. High school is not about development especially if your daughter plays and trains with her club team in a competitive environment. High school is about school spirit and comraderie with your school friends and they are not thinking about improving especially when there are so many different levels of players on each school team.

Thank you. Excellent advice and what she is doing. Playing the right way. She is frustrated though soccer wise because not on a good team hs level wise and she’s not getting support from her teammates. The kick and run for no reason is exhausting her fas the running up and down the field is futile. She is Enjoying playing with her friends though.

Are those the only other options?? Not knocking trying to keep kids out of trouble, but there might be more productive choices for those kids that never see the field during games. Indeed, though, 30 kids on the bench is pretty intimidating. smile

They can still do that at night after the games. You are deflecting the point.

Opening Week in Conference play! Class A predictions. Valley Stream South will struggle. They graduated their top player and looked weak in the non-leagues. They were an awesome story but the traditional powers will reign this year. Calhoun, South Side and Mepham will fight for the crown. Macarthur should also be in the mix. Manhasset and Wantagh always play hard and compete. Garden City is probably a year away but always talented. VSS will struggle mightily but you know they’ll play hard so it will be a fun year!f3

VSS still has their top 2 offensive threats. Both were on top of the leader board last year.

I don’t want to take anything away from the VSS girls. They are impressive as athletes and have speed (also lost plenty of speed). But, in watching them, they are more athletes than soccer players. Their top two and really the starting 11 are not as skilled and soccer-talented as some of their competitors. In seeing them this weekend, the top players on Shenendowa and Bethlehem were CLEARLY more skilled and more dangerous than South’s top threats and I think, unfortunately for VSS, that will be the case for much of the season in Conference 1
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 09/09/19 01:24 PM
And VSS actually has 4 offensive threats back but they lost their ridiculous center back. So now their back line is weak and the four scorers will be exposed because it was the center back #8 who really did the work that allowed them to freelance and use their athleticism. The back line will be weak and the scorers won’t be able to create without her.

You clearly did not watch this team last season if you can write that the top VSS players are not skilled. They showed their skills last year when they beat the competition to win States. The resume of their All American and two time ECNL Conference player of the year speaks for itself. If you don't think they can win, that's your bold opinion. But to say they are not skilled is clearly your most biased comment. What makes these girls less skilled than Wantagh, South Side, and Mepham?

I was at the Rocky Point - Hauppauge game on 9-16. The Ref's who called the game did not move much. They did not call 3 hand balls in the box. Said play on after a player was tackled from behind and flipped in the air (360). That was a yellow at least and could have been a red. I thought that players should be protected.
The quality of the Ref's is horrible.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 09/17/19 03:12 PM
I haven't seen them play this year, but I guess it's not a huge leap to say that the center back they lost to graduation probably created a lot of opportunities for the forwards last year.

Same reason the players going to Duke,South Carolina,Pitt, Villanova are who also playing on that SAME team. HS team has more quality than any DA club could possibly offer, maybe not coaching but certainly quality players. NJ quality of players seems to be much higher than LI, what could it be? I betting that the club level training is far superior. More evidence of how LI soccer is a mess.

Crazy idea but maybe they want to? College coaches don't care as long as you work your tail off the rest of the year and come in ready for August pre season. They know some GDA coaching options are piss poor and that a few months of HS soccer isn't going to cause a real setback for players at that level.

It really is cringe-worthy most of the time. Some schools have terrible/nonexistent coaching, most rely on the 2-4 players on the squad who can actually play the game. Obviously 2-4 players can't carry an entire team for an entire game. And even those kids end up just booting the ball back and forth.

You ain’t lyin’........ Too many other options for athletic girls and too many restrictions and too many players needed to fill a squad. Brutally bad at times. Even LI club soccer is poor in many spots, HS takes it many levels lower.

Yeah, there are lots of options for athletic girls. And the HS usually want those girls for multiple sports. Plus there's little $$ in soccer scholarships, so parents who are counting on soccer paying for school are misguided at best. Unfortunately, my kid loves soccer lol. She's having a mostly fun, sometimes frustrating experience playing with her school peers. For me watching, it's mostly frustration!

The majority of ACL injuries are non-contact. They happen on grass and turf. Game or practice. Club, HS or college. Foolish to think playing HS is a contributing factor to injuries like this. The Duke player was plaing HS because she enjoyed it, maybe the UNC player did not.

Where is the playoff info listed - not on section VIII website yet?

The Nassau AB seedings are identified in the handbook on the secvii.org website. AB1 - all 7 teams, AB2 - all 6 teams (CSH is a B team for playoffs), AB3 - top 3 teams (Wheatley and CP are B teams for playoffs), AB4 - top 2 teams (OB is a B team for playoffs) and then top team from AB5 and AB6.

20 teams and they are seeded straight down in the order listed above. So for example, AB1 teams are seeded 1-7 based on where they finished, AB2 are 8-13, etc.

That bracket doesn't agree with what's in the handbook. Where are teams 15 and 16?

That is incorrect for the play-in games and first round. The play-in games for A this week are:

16 vs 17 - Winner plays 1
13 vs 20 - Winner plays 4
15 vs 18 - Winner plays 2
14 vs 19 - Winner plays 3

Other first round games are then:
8 vs 9
5 vs 12
7 vs 10
6 vs 11

Massapequa and Syosset are tied. I believe seeding will be decided with a coin toss tonight or tomorrow.

the play in winners are 15 and 16 in A playoff bracket.

VS South vs. Bellmore JFK
Garden City vs. Locust Valley/Friends
Calhoun vs. North Shore
Mepham vs. NHP/Long Beach

2019 Conference AB1 Winner & #1 seeded Wantagh are in a position to play 2 stronger teams in the first 2 playoff games then the teams who finished 2nd place Garden City & 3rd place Mepham. Gotta love that Nassau County Girls Soccer Coaches Association seeding logic of no thinking required. Just set the seedings before the season starts. Who needs to come up with a fair seeding system when you have people who assume that every team is in the right conferences to begin with. Seaford obviously belonged in AB2 or at least AB3 to start the season especially after finishing in 2nd place to State Champions VSS in the 5th of 7 conferences last year. Hey it could have been coaches decision too to stay with the same competition as they had last year. Especially, since they missed the playoffs because of the absurd playoff system that is in place. Anyway, it would be great to see a Conf. AB4 team upset one or two AB1 Teams once again to show how flawed their stale seeding is. Wakeup NC Girls Soccer Association! Let the future #1 seed play a legitimate ranked #16 or #17 seed and not a team that could be ranked as high as a top 9 or top 10 team in AB.

Good post. It's disappointing that no effort is put into determining proper seeds for the playoffs. Seaford may be one of the top 6-7 teams this season and is going into the playoffs extremely underseeded, as VSS was last year. You can also argue that Plainedge and MacArthur, talent-wise, are top 5 teams in AB this year. So not only does Wantagh potentially face a top 7 and then a top 5 team, but one of Plainedge or MacArthur are going to only play one playoff game, which is ridiculous.

It would take all of an hour for someone to review the results of the season and come up with seeding that makes far more sense than this. No offense to the girls, as they played in a tough division, but does 0-12 Lynbrook really deserve a playoff spot?

It's not a perfect system, but the conferences are setup so that teams are promoted and relegated based on past results as well as expected changes to the roster (graduating seniors and incoming underclassmen). They do try to make the conferences even, and AB1 is pretty good this year with most games very close. Plainedge and Macarthur are not better than most teams in AB1 and I would argue they aren't in the top 5, especially Plainedge.

Power rankings like done in Suffolk helps
But no system is perfect

I don't hate the power rankings in Suffolk, granted not perfect and there's definitely a "luck of the draw" element with the schedule, but overall it's pretty good. And that's coming from someone whose kid's team was baaaaarely edged out of playoff contention last year in favor of teams that were definitely weaker. This year, they know every. game. counts.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 10/24/19 06:15 PM
Yes, but how does a team with no wins get in?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 10/24/19 06:28 PM
Scores aren't always an indicative of who's the better team. It means they won on that day under those circumstances. You don't know if people were injured, not playing, or how the game was officiated, the conditions etc. Anyone can win on any given day. A team may have an "edge" is all....
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 10/24/19 07:09 PM
0-12 is a rough season and yes some games they may have put played a team or gotten unlucky
But norm having a single W is a hard sell to advance into a playoff bracket

Agree on Suffolk - power rankings are good
And my kids team will Be on outside looking in for 2nd straight year

First round in AB is set:

(17) Seaford at (1) Wantagh
(9) Plainedge at (8) MacArthur
(13) Lynbrook at (4) Southside
(12) Bellmore at (5) VS South
(15) Locust Valley at (2) Garden City
(10) North Shore at (7) Calhoun
(19) Long Beach at (3) Mepham
(11) Bethpage at (6) Manhasset

I don't think there is a VS South or Mepham this year to come up out of a bottom division and make run.

Maybe Seaford? They have 2 very talented players up front.

Anyone see any other potential upsets? Plainedge over MacArthur would be the easiest to see as they beat MacArthur less than a week ago. This is on MacArthur's field though and MacArthur does have the best player on the field and she can take over games.

I don't think North Shore has enough to get by Calhoun and I don't know anything about Long Beach.

With the final week of the regular season here, let's take a look at some of the top matches of the week with seedings and postseason appearances on the line. Along with the final regular-season rankings.

Tuesday
Massapequa at East Meadow, 4:15 p.m.

With Massapequa 10 days removed from handing defending Nassau Class AA champion Syosset its first loss of the season, the Chiefs look to enter the postseason on a high note. Massapequa, always led by a strong defense, hasn’t allowed a goal in its last five games. Sierra Brophy leads the offense with 14 goals and three assists, and Gianna Savella has eight goals and five assists.

East Meadow, which finished as co-Nassau Class AA champions last year but failed to advance in penalty kicks, looks to rebound heading to the playoffs, led by Stephanie Sparkowski in net and Myla McLeod on the attack.

Hauppauge at Glenn, 4 p.m.

These are a pair of teams that figured to be in the mix but not toward the very top of Suffolk Division II. Well, both teams have proved capable of playing with any team in the county, entering Tuesday in third and fourth place, respectively, in the power points system.

Alex Rush leads Hauppauge with 11 goals and two assists. Emma Voege has five goals and 11 assists, and Sarah Emmi has 11 goals and three assists for Glenn.

Wednesday
Smithtown East at West Islip, 4 p.m.

West Islip hasn’t allowed a goal over its last five games, winning four of those contests. The Lions play a physical brand of soccer that doesn’t always look the most fluid on the field, but it’s highly productive, led by Jaden Hampel’s 10 goals and two assists.

Smithtown East has been arguably the biggest surprise in terms of preseason expectations, after entering the season as the No. 16 ranked team in Suffolk Class AA in Division I play. But entering Tuesday, the Bulls are fourth in the division at 11-1-1.

Thursday
Harborfields at Bayport-Blue Point, 4:30 p.m.

With 10 Suffolk Class A teams making the postseason, both teams in this matchup are right on the cusp of making the postseason. Depending on how the power points play out, this could be a de facto play-in game for the postseason.

In the CHSAA
St. Anthony’s wrapped up another undefeated season in CHSAA with a 2-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Monday, with goals from Nicole Gordon and Samantha Adams. The Friars have won the last two CHSAA state championships and could be on their way to a third with the trio of Gordon, Adams and Brianna Jablonowski leading the scoring.

Newsday's Top 10

I don't think there is a VS South or Mepham this year to come up out of a bottom division and make run.

Maybe Seaford? They have 2 very talented players up front.

Anyone see any other potential upsets? Plainedge over MacArthur would be the easiest to see as they beat MacArthur less than a week ago. This is on MacArthur's field though and MacArthur does have the best player on the field and she can take over games.

I don't think North Shore has enough to get by Calhoun and I don't know anything about Long Beach.

Looks like Seaford and Locust Valley could be a tough out for anybody. Should be competitive games. Good luck to all teams.

When will the game times get posted?

Apparently not. I'm assuming this has everything to do with the big football game GC is playing at home tomorrow.

The issue of "playoff seeding fairness" would reduce significantly, if Nassau had 14 teams in each conf. instead of 7. Especially if they insist on Playoff Seeding assignments BEFORE the season starts based on how a team finishes in its respective conference.

Great example of why the Nassau HS Varsity Soccer playoff system is a fiasco.
Based on the handbook on BOCES website & w/ the current standings Lynnbrook has now successfully made the playoffs by winning a total of 1 game in its past 22 conference games in the past 2 years in the same conference! Congratulations! Lynnbrook was assigned to the wrong conference 2 yrs in a row and what is their reward? Automatic PLAYOFF berths 2 years in a row! Yeah I would say the Suffolk County Soccer system is 100x better than Nassau's highly DEMENTED playoff seeding system.

More rewards for last place and 0 conference wins.
#13 Lynnbrook gets to be in a great playoff position playing at home against the lowest seed in the playoffs #20 and they just manage to edge VSC 1-0. They now have more playoff wins then conference wins this year! (Conf 0-12) Now, they get to play in another playoff game and travel to #4 SouthSide! It's wonderful finishing in last place and not having to worry about playing any of the Top 3 teams early in the playoffs. Lynnbrook will now play in more playoff games than most teams will get to play in all year! Pat yourselves on the back Nassau County. You have the perfect system to setup winless conference teams to make a run in the playoffs Who could ask for anything more?

Hey soccer parents, if you were the #1 Wantagh team, who would you rather play? A 15-1 Seaford team that scored 73 goals & let up 12 goals all year against Conf 4 competition, or would you prefer to play a Conf 2 Lynnbrook team that managed to score 6 goals in its 12 conf losses? Tough choice..

So based on the other postings about MacArthur & Plainedge, here is a somewhat a good measuring stick to determine if MacArthur or Plainedge are in the top 5 conversation. #4 Southside plays Lynnbrook in a playoff game at 2pm today. In 2 games this year, MacArthur scored 12 & gave up 3 vs Lynnbrook & Plainedge scored 9 & shut Lynnbrook out both times. If SouthSide only manages to beat Lynnbrook by 2 or 1 goal, I think it would be an easy & fair argument that MacArthur & Plainedge are somewhat stronger teams than Southside. If Southside should happen to lose or tie today, then we will know for sure that MacArthur & Plainedge were seeded incorrectly & should have been considered top 4, 5, 6 or 7 seeds. If Southside spanks Lynnbrook by more than 7 goals today and shuts them out, then Southside definitely deserves the #4 seed Hands DOWN!

North Shore over Calhoun 2-0, so you have VS South barely getting by Bellmore with a goal with less than 2 minutes left and Calhoun losing to the third place team in Div 2. This isn't a year with a lot of overwhelming strength in Conference A.

You still have to beat teams to become champion. Play who is put in front of you and win. Then you can call yourself champion. Should not matter who, just win baby. Stop whining, you sound like a sore loser.

Legit question - Seaford beats Wantagh and is awarded an away game at MacArthur? Should Seaford have the home game since they now take over the top bracket, regardless of seed #?

Ok - Friday night the voting ( HS COACHES ) was done for all the girls soccer awards except ( all- state and MVP Of play offs ) . A lot of GDA Players on that list so I hear . Can’t wait to see .

Seeing as probably kids that are very interested in and motivated to pursue club soccer would have some overlap with strong HS play why would that be a surprise?

I am sure many HS sports have award winning players also pursuing the sport on the club side. There are also some strong award winning HS players that are not in a position to also play club sports. Good luck to all the players.

isnt this where the coaches just nominate who they want to get an award.

Pretty much...the other coaches do "vote" but it's really just procedure. Always a ton of forwards and a handful of M, D & GKs.

I'll take that over the "All-County" forward with double digit goals against the teams with -100 GD, but zippo against any halfway decent team, lol!

It's pretty funny. My daughter as a freshman played over many seniors the entire season, was 2nd highest goal scorer & didn't get an award because all seniors had to..lol

This is so true. Kids who deserve honors are set aside not to hurt the feelings of kids and parents that don't. It's a reflection of our society.

Most of the booster club presidents kids get it and dont deserve it or those kids that suck up to the coach. So sad the ones that deserve it get overlooked. Seen it happen to too many girls on our team.

Anybody have insight on how the process actually works? Is it based off the coach's recommendation, then rubber stamped by a committee? Do players get nominated but possibly not receive an award?

AA-Smithtown West, no question. Fast & Aggressive with a bench that rivals everyone else's starting 11. Connetquot is a sturdy team, would've had a deeper run in a different seed. Honorable mention to Smithtown East, Sachem East and WI.

A-Up for grabs. HHW dominates standings but doesn't dominate games, they have some serious speed and superb skill but Lady Luck is really what's been carrying them. SWR, complete team of strong, fast & physical athletes with tons of playoff experience. Going with SWR for the win.
Honorable mention to Hauppauge, ESM and Glenn-all 3 could possibly upset, but won't.

B-Babylon, held their own against some top level Class A teams and would be a real playoff contender in that class as well.

Congrats to #8 MacArthur & #3 Mepham making the finals. So who do you think will wiin? #8 seed MacArthur only has 1 loss to a Long Island team in 16 games including playoffs. Meanwhile # 3 seed Mepham lost 5 games to Long Island teams this past season.

If we look at their common opponents, MacArthur beat North Shore twice by 2 goals and Mepham tied North Shore in regulation & needed OT to advance in playoffs.

Evidently North Shore#10 & MacArthur as #8 seedings really did not reflect where they should have been ranked in the playoffs.

Other opponents playing mutual opponents....
#3 Mepham settled for ties against "so called" #1 seed Wantagh twice this season. Meanwhile #17 seeded Seaford beat #1Wantagh on the big stage on the road in the playoffs and then #8 MacArthur beat #17 Seaford.

So who is the real # 1 team heading into the FINALS?

MacArthur will play better soccer, but Mepham will foul incessantly, knowing that the refs won't call most of them. At the end of the day, the refs are the ones that will have a large influence on the game. Free kicks are usually the deciding factor. That's how MacArthur won against Southside yesterday.

If they are suspended can they still play high school?

Terrible referee at McArthur v. Southside yesterday. He barely blows whistle all game until the end, blows whistle when ball hits him in play with 30 secs left and sets up drop ball deep in Southside territory, then blows second whistle for light foul immediately after, setting up penalty kick goal with 15 secs left. Well played game should have gone to OT

Yes, HS doesn't care. They are suspended in GDA.

No reason for drop ball here, refs are still considered part of the field in high school rules. Lucky for him SS didn't protest the game due to this misapplication of the rules. Shocking

Wasn’t the south side coach suspended for hanky panky! So shady but not surprising...
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 11/04/19 04:16 AM
South side was aggressively fouling MacArthur players all game long. Nothing was being called. On the direct kick the foul had to be called it was so blatant. Don’t know the drop ball rule but it happened deep in south side territory. Don’t know how they would protest it actually benefited them at the time. Overall was a great game.

bad ref - oh you mean like a ball off the upright and goesin or hand ball in the box or a ball that doesnt cross the line but counts. come on it goes both ways, you had the favors and now you just lost in the finals. Well Done WI.

Anyone who was at the game knows what really happened..Smithtown was robbed by the common theme inadequate refereeing. Outplayed you with !0 kids on the field and scored two goals a man down. Your coach shows some class talking about bullies. Joke.

Oh please. If it was the other way you’d be celebrating. Your 2 goals were offsides. There was a reason you had a man down. You lost when it counted most! Suck it up butter cup.

EXACTLY! We played Smithtown West and they are the EPITOME of thug rugby school ball! At least 50% of their goals during the season were offside goals, and I'm not surprised in the least that they got a red card. Sucks for them that they got a ref who called them out on their crap when it mattered the most! Suck it up Buttercup INDEED.

Congrats to WI, good luck against Mass-they're a tough, very skilled team...

Having seen all three teams, have to agree. Seaford forced play against MacArthur until the very end and was gutsy. Congrats to MacArthur.

Unusual year in Nassau this year, where it seems that the top 3 teams in AB2 were probably comparable to most or all of the teams in AB1.

Seaford forced it against MacArthur ???
Not sure what game you were watching ?
Losing four to one and STILL keeping six players on defense was hardly forcing it !

It's more reflective of how rankings can go wrong. Nothing's perfect.

West Islip haven't given up more than 2 goals in a game all season. They've won their last 9 games with 5 shutouts allowing only 6 goals. Their defense is pure speed and no striker is going to outrun them. Their 5' 10" goalie is fearless. In summary, 3 goals is not happening. This game will be a 1-0, 2-1 final either way.

Not a fan of WI but was pretty impressed by their goalie and even more that I heard she’s a freshman. She’s done well for them

Congrats on the win WI .Lets not get carried away that you know how to play soccer .
Kick it as hard and as far as you can . Listen to your crazy coach and knock other players to the ground . Take the lucky wins in all 3 games and be humble.
Winning in PKS against a bad Hills East team just shows that HS soccer is horrible.
The other teams just sucked a little more than you .

I'm kind of pulling for this WI team, reading about the kid who is playing for her dad tugged at my heart strings...
This team screams what HS soccer is supposed to be about, a bunch of kids, all different ages, all different interests, coming together to win. Saturday will definitely be a Beauty vs. Beast game, but I'm a firm believer that most of these games come down to whoever wants it more. Good Luck to both teams, and most importantly-stay healthy!!!!

Yes me too! the dad passed away and she said this is her connection to him. She doesn't even play soccer, she is a D1 Lacrosse commit, just playing for her dad and her friends/school. Exactly what school sports should be about. Not who plays for what club and who is top player. All the crap that comes with club ball. Good luck WI, win or lose you girls should be proud. I'm rooting for the underdog.

Shoreham-Wading River rallies to win Long Island Class A girls soccer title
By Owen O'Brien
owen.o'brien@newsday.comowen.o'brien@newsday.com

It may have been Ashley Borriello’s birthday, but she gave the best present of the day.

With the score tied at 1 following 80 minutes in the Long Island Class A girls soccer championship, Borriello delivered for Shoreham-Wading River.

The junior chased down a loose ball at the end line and sent a cross to the middle of the field, where Elizabeth Shields finished 1:43 into overtime for the go-ahead goal. Shoreham-Wading River held on to defeat MacArthur, 2-1, at Berner Middle School in Massapequa on Saturday.

“It’s just crazy,” Shields said. “She played so well on her birthday and we really did this, not just for us, but for her. We wanted to give her something good today and it was not losing.”

After the game, the team sang ‘Happy Birthday’ and even had cupcakes for Borriello on what could only be considered the sweetest of a 16th birthday.

“This is so exciting,” Borriello said. “I think this just topped it off. It’s the best birthday ever.”

Shoreham-Wading River (15-2-2) advances to play Jamesville-DeWitt in a Class A state semifinal at SUNY Cortland’s White Field at 3 p.m. on Nov. 16 It is the Wildcats’ first trip to the state semifinals in program history.

“Honestly, I don’t think it really set in that we are the first team to go from Shoreham,” Shields said. “ ... We felt from day one that if there was a team, we were going to do it this year.”

The Wildcats wanted to start the overtime period fast and did just that. Shoreham-Wading River started on the attack, culminating in Borriello chasing down the ball for Shields’ goal.

“I just knew I was going to get it and it’s not going out,” Borriello said. “And if I can’t shoot it, I’m going to cross it back and hopefully there’s someone there to finish it.”

MacArthur (14-2-2) struck first when Kara DeBlaiso scored off an assist from Tara Sweeney with 24:52 remaining in the first half. It was the second straight championship game Shoreham-Wading River trailed before scoring the final two goals. Shoreham-Wading River rallied to win the Suffolk County championship on Tuesday.

Lakin Ciampo scored the tying goal from 18 yards out off an assist from Gianna Cacciola with 33:20 left in the second half for the Wildcats.

“They don’t give up,” coach Adrian Gilmore said. “It’s easy to be up, but it’s hard to come back, especially in a high level game. These girls, it’s emotional. They are 16, 17 years old, so there’s a lot on them, so to be able to bounce back after down 1-0 [is impressive].”

Gilmore also credited her defense, featuring a backline of Alexa Constant, Sara Hobbes, Brooke Langella and Lydia Radonavitch with Alison Devall recording six saves.

“Coming in, we knew we had one of the best defenses in Suffolk County,” Gilmore said. “And I think they showed that.”

And with Saturday being a special day for Borriello, her teammates wanted to make sure it was a happy one.

“Ashley always plays amazing, but today there was just something else there,” Devall said. “She worked hard the entire game, she always does. But today was just different.”

Massapequa tops West Islip in double OT to win Class AA girls soccer championship

by Owen O'Brien
owen.o'brien@newsday.com

The Massapequa girls soccer team was reminded last year that nothing is given, everything is earned. This year, the Chiefs earned it.

When the Chiefs failed to reach the state semifinals last year, the ripple effects could be felt throughout New York State. Massapequa is a name that has become nearly expected be penciled in to the state tournament brackets from early September, but the Chiefs’ season ended in the quarterfinals of the county tournament last year despite being the top seed.

The players and coaches never forgot that.

“The attitude was redemption,” defender Kayla Mushorn said. “We wanted to get back, we wanted to show what Massapequa is and what we can do. Nothing is to be expected and that’s what we wanted everyone to know when we were trying out. And that’s what the team has been focusing on -- the future.”

The Chiefs proved that Saturday night. Massapequa defeated West Islip, 1-0, in double-overtime in the girls soccer Long Island Class AA championship/Southeast Regional Final at its hometown Berner Middle School. The Chiefs (16-2) play Fayetteville-Manlius in the Class AA state semifinal at SUNY Cortland’s White Field Saturday at 3 p.m.

“This team is something else,” midfielder Emma Cooney said. “We’ve trained all season to get where we are. Last year we ended short and it wasn’t what we wanted so to come back and get revenge on every team is just an incredible feeling. I’m very proud of everybody.”

Gianna Savella scored the winning goal off an assist from Sierra Brophy with 8:10 remaining in the second overtime. The Chiefs defense, led by a backline of Kaylin Ricci, Julia Stegner, Sophia Hatziyianis and Mushorn with Caroline Brucato in net, held West Islip off the scoreboard the remainder of the contest and over 100 minutes of play.

“We’ve had so much success this year offensively moving forward with numbers and being able to get three, four players involved in a play,” assistant coach Ron Forman said. “And I think that really showed in the end on that overtime goal.”

Massapequa outshot West Islip, 28-10, including, 17-5 with shots on goal, but Isabella Tomeo made 16 saves stonewall the Chiefs. West Islip finishes its season, 15-4-2.

“I was definitely getting discouraged missing all those opportunities,” Savella said. “But my teammates picked me up, which led me to score. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

“It was such a relief,” Hatziyianis said. “We really worked hard to [score], so we were just happy that she did.”

And now Massapequa, playing in its sixth state semifinals the last seven years, are two wins away from a potential eighth state title after falling short last year.

“It was a little reality check for us, I think that’s what the real word is,” Forman said. “We always come to win that final game and going out early, it was a reality check that you have to do a little bit more. That’s something our seniors, especially our captains, they did more this year and they brought the team together.”

“This is what soccer is all about,” Mushorn said. “Yes, it’s rough in those last minutes, but this is why I play and this is a group of girls, a great team, and this is why we do it.”

Congratulations to Massapequa on the win. But West Islip should be proud !!! No one had them in this game , everyone said a blowout. Gutsy team that almost did it. Great run , great group of girls , and the keeper will be around for 3 more years. Good things to come. Congratulations to West Islip on a great year. I know Massapequa won but what a one sided article from newsday , I think there is more to the story of that game. Hold your head high West Islip. You scared them

I know Massapequa won but what a one sided article from newsday , I think there is more to the story of that game. Hold your head high West Islip. You scared them

Love reading the absurdity. Great entertainment. Beats any Netflix or reality show, it’s free and in the backyard!

To be fair, Newsday is notorious for it's one sided coverage. They have their perennial favorites and make their top picks for teams and players early in the season, when a team/player doesn't fit their established narrative, they double down on the "who could've predicted" attitude or just ignore completely.

-Case in point, St. A's headline of how they coasted into States scoring 9 GOALS!!!!!!! not a single mention of how they let up 5, I'm still questioning whether it was a misprint or not.
-The real story with the Massapequa team is all the DA players coming back. That's why they got knocked out so early last year...but not a single peep about it.
-Absurd covering of Smithtown West would've had out of towners believing they were the back up roster for the USWNT.
-The real story in Class A was SWR and that kid who is just delivering game after game, but all we read about was their self appointed Golden Girl from HHW.
I could go on and on...just take it all with a grain of salt and congratulate ALL the kids!

All the DA players?? There are two and they are 10th graders. That’s why it is not being spoken about because last year they were freshman.

The 2 DA players replaced some very strong seniors from last year. Otherwise the team is pretty much the same. With a new defense beside one girl. None of those defenders are DA and were on team last year except one . Just had a bad game at the wrong time last year. Massapequa went to States with no DA players 2 years ago.

DA may have impacted other programs but not Massapequa. Their past titles were all without DA players.

I do agree That Newsday is a joke though.

Who are you kidding? Those 2 DA players made all the difference at Massapequa this season. One with assists and the other with goals. You wouldn’t have won poop without them

The joke is Massapequa Faithful refusing to admit that without the returning DA players (and it's more than just 2 Sophomores) they don't even make it out of quarterfinals against Oceanside...or beat Syosset...or beat WI. Maybe, just maybe they could've still won in Semi's but it would've been a VERY different game, but they wouldn't have even gotten there bc they would've lost to Oceanside. So puh-leeez, the DA kids who opted to play HS are indeed the story.

The entire starting lineup excluding maybe 2 or 3 could play DA if they chose to. They chose not to play DA. So what are they not admitting to? Because you play for a DA team you are automatically better than those that choose not to play DA. Half those girls on Massapequa have beaten DA teams in competition. It’s like because you wear a red Nike polo shirt you can swing a club like Tiger on Sundays. You sound like a moron. Having a DA jacket doesn’t make you a better player.

The team is solid and the 2 yes only 2 DA players are a welcome addition.

Massapequa without their stars would have been average at best. Pray we I mean they come back next year.

Two (among many others at other schools) who chose to violate the USSF GDA requirements. Make a choice to be in a league that permits HS or play in GDA with the stated requirements in the contract you signed of no outside competition or HS with a strict practice to game ratio.

There are at least 3 players on this year's roster that did not play HS last year because of DA and they are indeed the difference makers, like it or not. Without them, Mass gets knocked out in quarterfinals again. Period. And agree, the rah-rah we tried harder this year quotes in Newsday are comical.

What is the process of picking All County and All Conference awards? Is it strictly the coach? Or is it a vote? Are there limits for HSs?

They can play as long as the division adheres to GDA rules (i.e. no subbing back in).

Suffolk dinner is next week, Nassau is the week after. Newsday only publishes their picks for All-Long Island. NYSSWA will publish All-State on their site in the next few weeks. There's no public link or anything, but most schools and clubs will congratulate players on their awards on their social media.

My kid's coach told me that they narrow it down to the players that get the most and most "significant" votes for All-County. Most "significant" meaning votes from coaches from top teams. So say a kid gets an All-County nod from an opposing coach from a team that's Division champs or County Champs or even State Champs, that nod will get weighed more heavily than a vote from an opposing coach from the last place team that a kid snagged a bunch of points from.
From there, the NYSSWA weighs difficulty of team schedule and team success to suss out what team the kid get awarded.

OK so how/who selects the All County Players? Do the teams coaches pick? Do other teams give bids to other teams players? Why the mystery? Other sports it's their own coaches that select the All County Players....

Not sure why you think there's any mystery involved...The team coaches submit the kids they think should get awards and what award they should get. Then other coaches in the Division vote on those kids and that's how you get All-County, Division etc. From there, the top All-County players get submitted for All-State. Pretty simple.

When do the girls get notified that they are invited to the awards dinner?

My daughter was notified like 2 weeks or so ago. We don't know what she is getting, just that she is getting an award. Her coach didn't tell her, he said he didn't know.

The DA and HS are actually battling entities. HS coaches want kids to leave DA and play HS.

Tuesday is the big night for the girls in Suffolk . Let’s see how many GDA Girls get All county Awards Or better . Maybe we should take photos of their names in the booklet and send them into the federation.

Well the dinner came and went last nite
Upgrade in food from last year’s rubber chicken parm
All and All a nice nite as many of the girls from different schools have competed vs eachother for a few years in school ball and even longer on the club circuit
While I am not from Swr - I do think the team should have been acknowledged for the winning the state title - a goal every team aspires to but very few achieve
While most certainly a team game imo the individual awards were spot on
Esm goalie Carley Travers is a general on the field controlling her defense and holding most offense threats at bay game after game
HHH foward jordan levy for 2nd year winning best offensive player - what more needs to be said the girl can just flat out play the game at a extremely high level

The awards themselves are about the parents bragging rights. This is high school soccer and the night is about the team and what they achieved as a group during a long season. How they pulled together as one and enjoyed the whole high school experience. It was not pretty soccer nor was it as competitive as some of there club teams but they will remember the season as being part of a bigger experience which was playing with there school friends and the experience of the whole school being part of there games. That is what the high school season is about. Trust me when I tell you for those fortunate enough to be playing next year in college that moment of getting committed or signing the NLI two weeks ago is bigger than an award in high school but the experience of playing in high school is something they will never forget.

SWR definitely deserved a little more kudos, both individually and as a team. ESM GK is truly top notch. Not as impressed as you are with the HHH kid, good player but calling HS games extremely high level is a bit of a stretch.

I don't even remember the announcer saying SWR won the states. We were confused at our table and many coaches and parents were talking about it. Suffolk doesn't have a state winner that often.... thought it would have been a bigger deal. Would have thought that section xi would have been proud.

You can bet if Islip had won States, the whole room would've been forced to give the team a 10 minute standing ovation, lol. Ever notice how many POYs & All-Americans come out of Islip? Must be the water, lol. It is what it is...glad my kid is done with all of this, she had a great ride with her school teammates and at the end of the day that's what it's all about:)

Or Smithtown West for that matter. Unless you are Northport, SW, and West Islip you don't matter. They messed up on a few things last night but much better than last year!!

What was with the Refs? They should have given them rule books and a test.

I think that's what OP was saying. The Islip coach is president of Section XI Coaches association, so it's all about Islip all the time...even if a team from another school wins States. SMH

I haven’t read anywhere claims of destroying them. It was a good game. Could have gone either way. Not sure about the cheating accusation. Sounds more like sour grapes. I’m sure your child has already moved on. You should probably try to do the same.

Same thing with Massapequa. Bruce for president. Or maybe he is already

You can trash Massapequa all you want. Stats say it all. They win and they win pretty consistently every year. And they win big and have title after title in all categories. You sound pretty silly trashing a coach and team that in ink shows that they are a dominate program and have been for years. And Massapequa doesn’t care about your whining, they just take it to the field and hand you another reason to cry on the BOTN

I am sure you will post your players name on here so just go ahead. You don't have to ask a fake question and then answer it with a post. I would not advise it as negative comments will follow without fail, but post it if you must

Why would you post a child’s name on here knowing how vicious people are? Completely irresponsible.

And What is more disturbing is the fact that in the program under this award the year is listed but the name is not. There is no name listed next to the year. Everyone finds out when it is announced at the dinner. So you lie about having a copy of the program.

What is wrong with you?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 12/04/19 09:54 PM
That's incorrect. Lauren Brossard from Pt Washington is president. Additionally he is not a member of the Ex Bd.

The number is not listed in the program as well.
Sounds like an upset parent using the forum adults to add their negative comments about a player. Which has already started.

The post should be deleted.

I mentioned that I had a program in the event i could answer a question from the person that originally asked about the awards..The program list many award winners with the exception of the major awards. Your correct that I should never have mentioned her name. . The post should be removed. I'm new to the forum and never realized there are some many vile disgusting people who use it.

It's BS... To have a girl that railroads and scores against lower quality teams but can't score against the higher ranked teams get All-State. Quality over quantity..... That and Favoritism....

That's what happens when math and science teachers who have no idea how to coach soccer, they see the player who scores 100 goals against rec level teams but doesn't know how they disappear in big games. Just enjoy the moment, and for the other kids just use the season to stay fit.

This list is like a participation trophy. Why do you need 5,6,7 teams per class. this award should be an honor given to the best of the best. I also agree withe above poster, there should be additional defenders included. Who votes on these awards?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 12/10/19 01:39 PM
For some reason there is no understanding or appreciating of defensive player quality and limited appreciation for excellent midfield play if it does not directly lead to a goal.

I dont know why this is but i know this...on all the teams my kid has played on over the years - the most critical overall player on the team has always been a defender and an unsung hero. We love you defenders even if you have to toil in obscurity.

Calling it a participation trophy is a bit of a stretch. There's thousands of girls that play NYS soccer, if it was a participation trophy you'd have a lot more than a couple hundred, which is what you have if you tally up Class AA, A, B, C & D teams. The 5,6,7 teams per class is representative of the top 1-2% or so, IE in Class AA there's close to 7000 players across NYS, so the top 77 make All-State.

I totally agree that Defenders are wayyy underrepresented, but that's on the HS coaches not the NYSSWA. The way it works is, the HS coaches submit players from their team that they feel should be included on All State teams. From there, the other coaches in the Section (county) vote on those players. The ones who get the most & most significant votes are then "nominated" and forwarded to the NYSSWA for evaluation. If HS coaches aren't putting forth their Defenders as top players, then they won't make the list.

I think each team should be truly representative of a team-2-3 A, 3-4 M, 3-4 D and a GK, whatever combo makes up 11. And like the other poster, I am not a disgruntled D parent-my kid made All State this year and plays M, I just think there should be a better representation of all positions.

An All State team should be able to perform on a field against another team. This current All State team would have no defenders playing. It’s basically coaches looking to get a trophy in their high school display case. Bush league award.

Not including any of the best defenders on the top honorary team in the state makes no sense. Shows no appreciation or understanding of soccer and the critical value of high quality defensive play.

Use same power system for individual players similar to team power rankings . Coaches have too much influence on who gets awards . Majority of major awards are predetermined . Kids that have been out with injuries most of year are still receiving All State ?

A few of the awards are justified but the majority are not . What level club soccer are the All State selections playing ? What major soccer colleges are they committed to ?
A lot of great defenders and defensive mids are left out and are high level college commits .

Club and college commits have nothing to do with it, it's what the HS coaches see on the field. Like it or not, HS is a different style than club and if the top club kid can't adapt (although most do) that's on them.
I've seen Defenders from LI make 1st or 2nd team, but these kids were real lights out players that shut down all the top scorers and their coaches and the other coaches couldn't ignore them. Yes, there are plenty of kids that are deserving of accolades that get overlooked and a few that get them that are questionable and OF COURSE there are some politics at play but overall the lists are pretty decent.

I only looked at the first conference which is AA. Maybe the other conferences are more evenly represented. But in conference AA which from my understanding is an overall very competitive conference, there are 79 All State players listed. 10 are defenders. I mean come on.....that’s absurd. Those games for the most part are low scoring games. Not complete blow outs every game. No defenders make that first list?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: GIRLS High School (School Ball) Fall 2019 - 12/10/19 06:15 PM
For what it is worth. For the HS players I have seen play on the club side - the earliest and most high level commits that I am aware to date have gone to middies and defenders.

Unfortunately defenders get very little credit Most only care about offense yet defense keeps the game going. Would love to see offense go and play defense and see how it iis

that's the mind set of the high school coaches. it's poor to say the least.

From what I’ve seen the best defenders can play any position including offense since they’re usually pretty good playing out the back dribbling and passing. I’ve also seen the best offensive players have their position reversed to the back and play completely out of position or just not being effective at all trying to stop the ball. I’m sure there are exceptions to this.

HS coaches don't coach that way. They get set in their lineup and that's that. So while you're generally speaking correct, HS coaches are better at teaching science than knowing how to coach.

Most of the DI All State selections did not have a lot of points . They played on winning teams with plenty of support. Meanwhile some kids that had double and triple the points did not get picked , while playing similar or tougher schedules. They were also on bad teams that they carried to playoffs .

Overall the list was far less obnoxious than years past. Sure, some great players got overlooked, most obvious being the shortage of Defensive players-But, there was a pretty decent uptick in the # of GKs recognized, so that's good! Here are some points of interest-
-Class AA High School POY isn't even in HS yet, she's in 8th grade
-Multiple top 5 "leading scorers" from Nassau & Suffolk did not make the list
-Only 2 players from State Champion SWR get a nod-2nd & 6th team
-Close to 60 players from LI named All State, less than 45 of them were named top 100 by Newsday including several 1st & 2nd team picks

So how is the All-State list determined?

Newsday list is coaches favorites, not always the best player. Look at the Newsday lists stats you will see some only perform againist weeker teams.

coaches that have the most influence decide . In most cases it’s not based on talent .

Eh, I disagree...like someone else said, there's some that got overlooked, but for the most part the kids I've seen play that made this list are all pretty deserving.

Newsday also favors certain teams and players and ignores players from coaches they aren't chummy with:)

It’s all politics. If you have politics on your side everything else does not matter.

Senior Girls getting all county awards that aren't even going on to play in college. Gotta love this biased system.

How is that biased? Being biased would be if you gave awards ONLY to kids that were going on to play in college. Doesn't matter what the kid does off that HS field...club doesn't matter, collegiate aspirations, none of it. If the kid produced on that HS field, that's all that matters. I'm sorry if your kid did not get the award you believe she deserved, but that's no reason to go after other kids who got it instead.

What the hell difference does it make if they choose not to play in college? Some amazing players do not want to play college soccer. They don't deserve an award if they aren't playing? What if they are a 3 sport athlete and are playing a different sport in college? What a dumb statement!

Suck it, you know damn well HS soccer is equivalent to cyo. So these players getting awards for scoring a hundred goals against rec teams is a sham. Amazing players not wanting to play college? Amazing against cyo rec teams maybe.

Sorry first time on in a long time. Just had to point out how off the original posters opinion was, and should probably never weigh in on talent ever again. People just can’t be happy for someone else who is flourishing. I realize it’s human nature but it is sad.

Flourishing is a relative term here. Stat compiling against people who will never lace up a cleat after HS is well, nice, but miles away from placing the player in a “skilled” category. It’s the equivalent of winning a debate against someone with a debilitating stutter. (I.e. the lawyer in My Cousin Vinny)

Do you think getting that full ride had to do with playing on her HS team or club team?

Just laughable that you still have parents debating high school soccer. The minute the season ends the vast majority of these players have moved on to either another school sport or there soccer clubs and getting ready for there upcoming tournaments and season. Most could care less about the awards they get from the season. All they wanted to do is participate in a school sport with there friends. Playing for there schools are a big deal for them socially. Playing in front of class mates and parents are a big deal. Walking around school before and after games is a big deal. These are the memories that matter for them. Here we are months later reading parents who are still bitter about the outcome as well as the awards that were given out. Who cares? Clearly, parents care. When the season ended I exhaled that my kid was injury free and had a great experience. My memory was on the National letter of intent signing day when my kid signed her next 4 years to playing in college. Playing high school was a great experience and lasting memories. Now it’s time for everyone to move on.

Save the lecture. The response was only because some moron said they weren’t impressed by a specific player. I just pointed out maybe their judgement is a bit off since she is a highly decorated player and fully committed collegiate player. To explain the difference between HS and club is common sense. It would just be nice for people to be happy for a Local girl’s accomplishments instead of tearing into them.

Kid going into freshman year of high school in the fall. Do most high school varsity programs hold summer workouts heading into pre-season training/tryouts? Do most high schools have everyone tryout for varsity and then assign players to JV or cut? Local high school seems to have a decent team and a good coach - should I just reach out to them and inquire about how incoming freshman should approach the summer and preseason tryouts? I don't want to come off as "one of those" parents - but want to be sure my kid is able to tryout for varsity and let them determine if she is good enough or if she needs to be on JV.

The POY is Claire Hutton - an 8th grade midfielder. She is a superb player and controls games for one of the best teams in NY.

Contact HS AD or check school website
He/she will tell you when summer try outs are usually late August
Some teams play in summer leagues some do not
Most will hold captains practice during summer break
