The entire, well almost the entire youth soccer community from coast to coast, and border to border have come to a standstill because of the huge fauilure of the Got Soccer digital infrastructure.

Got Soccer defending their position have made statements (click here) that BOTN is not buying.

Yes, servers go down, hard drives fail, and other factors like DOS attacks can happen, and that is why backups are done at least daily of a website in case of situations like this...Got Soccer does not appear to have backed up that server. BOTN's server, as an example, is backed up twice daily and once around 3am every day.

If the data was safe and secure, a backup can be restored in a day or so max, depending on the complexity (usually in hours).

The fact that they hired a data recovery company means that they didn’t have backups and instead are trying to recover a failed hard drive. It’s very possible to get the data back, but as described, it’s a lot of manual work to do and notably it doesn’t always work out. I would not characterize the data as “safe and secure” if that’s actually what happened.

I’m sure they will be able to get the data back, but that is a huge mess from an infrastructure/hosting standpoint. An operation of their size should know way better.

Gross negligence. Paying customers should demand answers.

My "shoot from the hip" reply is that there is no way anyone will bitch or say anything for fear of losing points.

Just in our area, LIJSL, ENYYSA, and upcoming tournaments who use the Got Soccer platform for schedules, brackets, and registration are all shut down. What totally boggles my mind is how a company of that size with all the data they hold does not do multiple daily backups is highly questionable, and I'm being kind.

Yes, their customer base should be pissed...for example, I think most all of the tournaments advertised on BOTN, along with the upcoming LIJSL season, LI Cup, and ENYYSA State Cup to mention a few are on hold.

I read part of the Got Soccer statement to my wife and she picked up on the word forensics. She's been a forensics expert since the early 2000. She said there is no reason to have forensics for data loss. Just saying.

no one can't really say anything. They run tournaments, leagues and player registration. And if they don't all Leagues go through them and all players information have to be input in that system. They should push back the league at least one week or something. Thats terrible what happened people are losing money left and right and then all passes and schedules have to be done in less than a day. they took control of everything for no reason. but is mostly because everyone in Soccer is obsessed with their points.

Not quite sure where your wife works or if it’s just a hobby, but forensics is used all the time for data loss and recovery.

In cybersecurity role, "forensic experts around the country" is a specific term I read on incident response communication templates. Could be misused, but feels like ransom type attack that compromises even the backup of the system. Assume all data is compromised.

forensics:

scientific tests or techniques used in connection with the detection of crime.
a laboratory or department responsible for tests used in detection of crime.
adjective: forensic

Forensics is used in data recovery. But this does mean that data, perhaps all of the data, was lost to corrupted. This is beyond comprehension how a business this size didn't have proper disaster recovery in place.

GotSport has also increased hosting club sites and club player registration process. Their latest update reads like desperation: encyclopedia pages on the floor (hope the dogs are all outside).

My wife's answer

Based on GotSport message, as I read their statements, I find many flaws:

” The good news is that all data is still there and completely safe and secure”
If you claim that there was no security breach, but a simple “server error” which require forensics and data recovery intervention, then how can you make a statement about the data integrity? How do you know all data is there, if you need data recovery?

Usually, a server malfunction or a dump, could corrupt data in the process of processing data and at the time the server stopped working. So you cannot make a statement of data integrity, when you don’t know if in fact the data is intact.

Simply put: Although both methods recover loss data (which means not ALL data is there) the main difference is the intended purpose of recovery. As a well-seasoned forensic examiner I can tell you that forensics typically refers to the process of recovering or finding data on a computer system. Whereas, Data recovery, refers to the act of finding seemingly lost or damaged data and recovering it to a usable state.

So the intervention of the “country’s best forensic data recovery experts” leads me to believe that there in fact data loss, damaged, or corrupted, etc. And the need of these professionals to work around the clock is to eradicate and contain any further losses and obviously to bring the damaged server or a new server back online.

Maybe soccer needs some alternatives. The entire soccer world is paralyzed by one website going down...

There are quite a few alternatives, but you guys keep buying into the got soccer points, which I have said for years and years is at best a guesstimate, and if your club or team advertises you get a better rating, and additional points.

League Lineup
Demosphere
Playmetrics, and so many more alternatives....

The big question is will they be "whole" when they get back up...TBD.

Based on the amount of time they have been down, I'd be surprised if there was no data loss. At this point they might be stalling while seeking legal advice.
