Girls Academy approaches kickoff of inaugural season with 69 member clubs

As the Girls Academy (GA) approaches its opening month of the 2020-2021 campaign, the league has shared a breakdown of its initial conference alignment.

A total of 69 clubs across 7 conferences have signed on to compete in the inaugural season, which kicks off in August. Over 40 GA clubs are former U.S. Soccer Girls Development Academy members, while numerous others were accepted based on strong resumes across other top regional and national leagues.

Currently, the conference breakdown by number of clubs is as follows:

• Mid-America: 13
• Northwest: 12
• Mid-Atlantic: 10
• Southwest: 10
• Frontier: 9
• Northeast: 8
• Southeast: 7

Teams in the Northeast:

Long Island SC
STA Oakwood
New York Soccer Club
Cedar Stars Academy Bergen
NEFC
South Shore Select
Seacoast United

California leads all states by far with 15 total clubs competing in the GA. The following states are each represented by 4 inaugural GA members: Pennsylvania, Washington, Texas, Florida and New Jersey. Meanwhile, Virginia and Michigan are both home to 3 GA clubs.

The following states will each have a pair of GA clubs competing in the opening season: Missouri, Massachusetts, New York, Georgia, Arizona, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Maryland and Illinois.

States with one GA clubs each include: Colorado, Kansas, Wisconsin, Indiana, Delaware, Connecticut, North Carolina, Ohio, Maine and New Hampshire.

After kicking off the regular season in August, the GA’s first-ever showcase event will take place in Southern California in November.

The incoming GA commish (along with those joining the front office) have an incredible network of relationships, especially with the college coaches and scouts at the highest level. That, coupled with their deep professional experience and the influential/connected clubs is a real solid foundation.

Nice to see. Are the HS age teams also starting in the fall?

Let’s see what lessons were learned from the failure of the GDA. Many missteps based on arrogance and not listening to what the clubs have to say about making the league better going forward. If they try to compete against ECNL then they will fail. GA has to show college coaches and scouts they are a strong league with competitive clubs/teams and competitive players who can play at every level. For that these clubs have to be highly competitive regionally so that colleges will want to travel to GA Showcases as they did for GDA. For this league to survive they have to “stand alone” with strong clubs, strong teams, strong competitive players.

I am hoping GA turns out to be a quality option. My D plays at ECNL club but would be great if GA offers both an alternative and a competitor to improve the ECNL clubs experience for their players as well.

So the same parents who complained about going cross country for a showcase last year are all in all of a sudden? LI parents never cease to amaze. Choosing a location in between would make too much sense. Good luck getting east coast college coaches to be there.

College coaches (incl East Coast ) travel to wherever the showcases are held. There has never been a problem or issue in the past and now will be no different once these showcases get the okay. FYI, The leagues reach out to colleges from all 4 regions and get an idea what city would be best for them. They gage them on convenience to airports, flights, hotels, fields, etc. It’s not about convenience to parents and yes, a few LI parents are complainers, same as anywhere else.

If you honestly believe "there has never been a problem or issue in the past and now will be no different" you're living in a state of hopeful delusion. Covid changed the game, for everyone. Entire college conferences cancelled their seasons, many schools on the East Coast cancelled their in person semesters, the dark period keeps getting extended and is predicted by some to extend to November, and you think "now will be no different"??? Seriously?

You did not comprehend what I said, colleges will travel when the showcases will be able to occur safely. These showcases will not occur till the leagues ie. GA, ECNL, etc. are given the okay to organize these events. Very aware of the college league cancellations since I have a daughter who plays in the Patriot league. I never saId when will these showcases will occur just what will happen once they have been given the okay. I do not foresee any showcases before Spring 2021. Understand now?
