So I guess the Newfield Dad was incorrect about claiming his son as best player in Suffolk! 7-0 lmao! Can’t be best player when your team gets trounced like that! It’s ok everyone has to eat some humble pie sometimes!

Wow, didn't hear that Newfield Dad claimed his son was best in Suffolk County. That's crazy talk if it ever happened. But, on the other hand, haven't you ever seen a really good player on a really bad team? Happens all the time. Trash the dad though, not the kid. He is just a good player on a bad team.

It was one game and they got lucky on that bad call , 20 seconds left in overtime and the ref calls a PK when the foul was barely on the line .Funny no mention of the team that they played .I think there may be some surprises in Suffolk this year

Surprise might be either of the two Smithtown teams going all the way and that Newfield is not dominant? That's usually a good program.

Three weeks and we will be at playoffs, thank heavens.

Here's a HS story for you all. Game last night, defending goalie made a quick throw and seemed to twist himself, went down in a heap. Ball want out to the wing, defending team in possession but goalie was still down, refs stopped the game. Defending team claimed a foul, attacking team said they hadn't touched him, refs conferred, neither had seen the incident and they made it clear to the defending team that they couldn't make a call if they hadn't seen anything, regardless of what had happened. Fair enough. Coach claimed he had it on video.

So what happened next? Dropped ball at the point where defending team had it when game was stopped? Or dropped ball where the goalie fell?

Neither. Free kick to the goalie and a yellow card to the attacking team, captain got the card. Captain, who also happens to be a G8 (center ref to the uninitiated) asked the ref after the game, 'why did you give me the card?' ….. 'because no-one else stood up and admitted the foul' says the ref.

You can't make this stuff up.

A card issued to the captain for a foul no one admitted to yet that the refs said didn't happen because the didn't see it and therefore couldn't call it? WTF!! Just when you think you've seen and heard the worst from HS refs, something else comes along!! LMAO how pathetic. Might have to go to night games to get real referees.

Under new FIFA rules there are no more drop balls. Whoever last touched the ball gets a free indirect kick unless it was in the box in which case it's the goalkeepers kick no matter who last touched it.

The yellow card is a baffler though.

OP. Correct, except they aren't playing FIFA, or new rules at HS, not really quite sure what they are playing to be honest, some mumbo jumbo stuff but the proper call was either a drop ball (old rules) or an indirect (new rules) but in neither case was it a direct free kick in the box and a yellow card for an infraction that the refs did not see and couldn't call and a player they couldn't identify. It was a strangely refereed game. One handball call was made by the ref on the blind side of a player 30+ yards away, when the near ref in full view made no call. I talked to the kids about it, as we have more than one ref on the team, they said we just assume the calls will be random so we don't bother to complain or worry about it. Then if we get a good call, it's a bonus. Going back to new rules, I am not sure I ever saw these particular refs at meetings, so maybe they missed the new rules one in September. If we had a three man system, it would be so much better - think how many decent teen refs, who can keep up and have 20/20 vision could make these games and AR after school. As for the yellow card, it was almost worth it for the novelty factor.

Shortage of quality of refs and most of you parents scared them away with your actions. The parents are obnoxious and pure embarrassment to themselves

I saw a similarly strange one earlier in the season. Player is dribbling in the attacking zone about 30 yards from goal with 2 defenders right on top of him. Meanwhile across the field, another attacking player suffered a non-contact injury (think it was a cramp) and is lying on the ground. Ref stops the game so injured player can be attended to. For the restart, drop ball where defending team kicks the ball back to the attacking team?? Nope. Ref gives the attacking team a free kick from the spot where the game was stopped and what do you know, the attacking team takes it and scores. Really awful....

Hey go buy a whistle yourself, see how you do. Your probably one of those aholes, abusing refs, and you wonder why there are no refs, let's see how many games you can take before you quit, even if you make the right call, the other team abuse you, being a ref is a no win situation.

Not really. That’s new FIFA rules. Was that HS or club? HS don’t seem to be using new rules yet. Club would be.

Makes no sense to me why USSF doesn’t get involved in school soccer to at the very least make sure coaches are licensed .

Even better they could recognize it for the grassroots soccer it is and give a lot of support.

It was HS. If that is indeed a FIFA new rule, it is absurd. How can you penalize the defending team for a stoppage of play for an injury to the attacking team. You are giving the attacking team huge advantage by awarding them a free kick where they have 10 yard clearance and ability to setup a play....whereas, when the game was stopped they had the ball but defenders were literally right on top of the attacking player.

It is not a free kick. I'm pretty sure the ref didn't award a free kick. It was a drop ball. However, drop balls are now uncontested, in this case going to the team in possession of the ball when the ref stopped play. For the drop ball, the defense needs to be 4.5 yards away. Many coaches and players do not know this, they probably backed up 10 yards by themselves without being asked, however, this is not the fault of the ref, it is not his job to teach the new rules, which, btw there were several rule changes for this season.

That being said...you cannot score directly off of a drop ball. You also cannot take a touch, and then another touch and score off a drop ball either. Only one touch is allowed on the drop ball before another player must touch the ball. And, if this player kicked the ball directly into the goal like you are saying, that goal should not have counted. It should have been a goal kick. However, if the ball touched the goalie or someone else and then went in, it counts. Another important point about a drop ball is that it is a drop ball, and the ref should drop the ball. The ball is in play when it hits the ground. It is not a free kick, so the defending team can charge when the ball is dropped to the ground.

A goal off a drop ball is an odd situation, and pretty much never happened with contested drop balls, although obviously it could have. Now, that the rule was changed, I'm sure this will happen much more often as an uncontested drop ball allows for a much greater opportunity to strike the ball well, especially when players erroneously back up 10 yards, and wait for the offense to kick the ball.

I also must say that a High School game has two referees. So, the other official also failed if this was a drop ball kicked directly into the goal, because he could have alerted the other ref of his mistake, and they could have disallowed the goal. So, either that, or the ball was touched by the goal keeper or another player before it went in, and it was a perfectly legal goal. And in that case, the refs got in right, and kudos to them.

I only know these rules because I am a referee myself. 1st year, little kids.

I'm going to give the kids the benefit of the doubt here. They know the difference between a dropped ball and a free kick and what to do in that situation. No school team is going to allow a team an uncontested shot from the drop zone. Sorry but I've seen enough high school games to know the referees are not good and made another blunder of a call.
