How do clubs handle having tryouts for the fall 18 season before the Spring 18 season is over ? Do you withhold the tryout results until after the final game is completed?
Seems like a tough situation to navigate. If players get cut, and get notified right away, will they even show up for the final few games? Any input is appreciated.
lol Larry is right. It's a stressful time it you're worried about your spot or thinking about leaving. Some clubs will let you know if you're safe or not ahead of time, others will not. If your player is in the bottom third you should have already been out looking and attending practices elsewhere. if they're a top player and you're looking to move them up, same thing. Don't wait for "tryouts" because by then most teams know their roster. They hold cattle calls to appear to be fair and for the hope they might find 1-2 gems.
#1 Rule: don't tell anyone you're looking elsewhere. Some clubs/coaches can be real diks and if they find out they'll bench your kid. Parents at tryout time will also act super weird. In an ideal world all tryouts would be after the season is over. But that goes into June and before you know it everyone is off on vacation, camp etc. Clubs want to know how many teams they'll have so they can plan for staffing.

Agree with your post....but Rule #2 - once you decide to go let your team know asap and move on no wth no drama.....you never know what the future holds....
It's the middle of the season and the vultures are out. Instead of developing what they have they would rather poach other kids to replace their own. Pathetic how things are done on LI. Imagine we had leagues (NYCSL/ENY/EDP) that actually cared about more than money

I think you can be open about going to other tryouts if you ask your coach if your kid is safe and he doesn’t give you a definitive yes. Just make sure you tell your coach that coming back is your first choice and going to tryouts just in case.
Anybody looking around is as good as gone. 1. they obviously don't want to be where they are 2. With the soccer landscape so freaking fragmented there is always a roster spot to found somewhere, just bring your checkbook!

Very dependent on the coach and situation. Some of them can be real diks to kids, more so the ones they really want to keep. I've seen kids benched for the rest of the season once word got out they were leaving, even for playoffs and state cup games. The kids that were probably getting cut coaches don't care and some will make recommendations on where to try out. I agree don't burn bridges, but wait until the last possible moment to tell them. If they do act like diks, then you definitely made the right choice to leave.

I think you also have to weigh that sometimes the current coach is NOT picking the team for the following year. If next year's coach doesn't love your kid or has someone else they want to bring in then you might be out of luck, despite being a starter and getting great feedback from the current coach.

At many clubs they haven't even decided or announced who will be coaching next year. In my experience most often it's the current coach picking, sometimes with input from other coaches.
