LOCAL ATHLETE MIKAELA JENNINGS CALLED UP TO PLAY IN 2018 WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS
FOR PUERTO WOMEN’S NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM Under 17

Sophomore Kennedy Catholic High School Student and Attacking Center Midfielder for the premier New York Xtreme Futbol Club (NYXFC) is Heading to Managua, Nicaragua

Mahopac, NY – April 3, 2018 15-year old Kennedy Catholic High School Sophomore, Mikaela Jennings received an official invitation on April 2, 2018 from the Federacion Puertorriquena de Futbol (Puerto Rico Soccer Federation) to join the Puerto Rico Women’s Under 17 National Team where she will compete in the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Under 17 Qualifiers - the final round to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Jennings departs from New York on April 9th and will report to the Puerto Rico National team for training camp and official matches.

Jennings plays not only for her high school team but also for local New York premier soccer club, NYXFC or New York Xtreme Futbol Club. Head coach and President of NYXFC, Chris Lyn received the exciting news on Monday regarding Jennings selection. As Lyn states, “Jennings is the epitome of the type of player we hope to attract and develop within the club. Our club stands strongly behind it’s pillars of commitment, attitude and ability. Jennings has worked hard to get to this point and it’s hopefully just the beginning of an amazing soccer career for her.”

The NYXFC philosophy is unique and extremely supportive of its talented student athletes. The club teams compete at local, national and international levels. As Lyn states, “It’s great to see that Mikaela consistently competes and succeeds at the highest levels with her 02 team and older teams within her club. She has proven dynamic, effective and clearly makes an impact on her club team, and any team she plays for. Mikaela is fortunate to be surrounded by many talented student athletes on her NYXFC club team with similar achievements.” On Jennings’ current NYXFC club teams are players who have competed for their respective national teams including Israel, Portugal, Jamaica, Ecuador, and Ireland.

Jennings continues to compete in various collegiate showcase tournaments including the San Diego SURF CUP tournament in California, premier leagues and New York State Cup competitions. Over the years Jennings has also been selected to teams such as NYSCL’s PDP (Player Development Program) and ODP (Olympic Development Program).

“It is because of the culmination of Jennings athletic strengths, qualities of leadership, dedication to hard work and commitment to the club’s philosophies that Mikaela is able to compete at the highest level, we’re all so proud to see her hard work and focus is paying off,” said Lyn.

This is not Mikaela’s first appearance with her national team. Jennings started in 5 of the 6 games for the Puerto Rico National Team in recent CONCACAF competitions and earned her first CAP, (international goal) in the 1st round of the Caribbean Qualifiers tournament. Puerto Rico won against Dominican Republic, Bahamas and Anguilla, advancing them to the 2nd round of the Caribbean Qualifiers held in Haiti. In Haiti, Puerto Rico played against Haiti, Cuba and Jamaica giving Puerto Rico, for the first time in history, one of the three slots to advance to The CONCACAF Championships. The CONCACAF Championships will take place April 19th – 30th and will determine which three teams will advance to the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup finals held in Uruguay, November 13th – December 1st. North Korea are the current defending champions.
