Alexi Lalas Speaks!!!

An interesting interview with the guitar-playing redheaded defender of the 1994 US MNT, Alexi Lalas.

Can you imagine having to pay to hear his opinions?!?!?! Ha. I'll give him one thing - if he's smart then he knows that with his talent/skill level he has no business commenting on european and/or south american soccer, because the level at which those teams play is foreign to what he could produce. But he opens up when talking about american soccer because it's his level.

Like Lalas or not, he happens to be a bright guy and knows how to entertain, and not just talk about soccer. He's definitely a bit of a showman. But, better that, i think, than someone knowledgeable but boring.

As for knowing anything about European soccer, Lalas was the first American in the modern era to have played in Italy's Serie A (first division) for Padova from 1994 in to early 1996.

He even scored several goals off of set pieces against A.C. Milan and FC Milan (Inter).

Very few Americans get to play in Serie A. The other who comes to mind is Michael Bradley.

I think Lalas is refreshing and still evolving as a sportscaster. His sportscasting style is quite blunt as was his interview. His honesty and humility is refreshing. He also was not afraid to call out USMNT and the USSF on their atrocious play and failure to advance. You can tell that he has been carefully crafting his image as he continues to become more confident, vocal and animated. To me he has more credibility than some of the European sportscasters that never played the game and say the silliest things. He knows the game and you can tell he does his homework.
