What would be the general thoughts about a HS coach having his team go to the beach (not completely unusual) not just to train/condition on the sand but while after hours, when the lifeguards are all gone for the day, make the entire team get in the ocean. Smart ? Stupid ? Ingenious preseason coaching ? Reckless ?
From our experience with beach training, it's been fine if done in a safe manner. Our team always train on the sand for resistance and conditioning and then take a cooling shallow dip. No one leaves the group, no one swims out. It's more like wading. If that's the case, I think it's perfectly fine. If he has them swimming out to deeper depths, that's just asking for trouble with the unpredictability of the ocean, potential rip currents and varied levels of swimming skills. I would just tell my son to stay shallow and stay with the group. I think its fine and most groups to a quick cool down in the ocean.
