My daughter plays in this age range in LIJSL. I found this site a little to late and missed getting her in to any tryouts, which may be a good thing because I see a lot of people saying certain programs, that I thought were good, are being run horribly. So my question is, what program would you try to get your daughter in if you were starting now. What are the best programs? Is it Surf, Albertson, Susa?

We live in Bethpage but are able to travel a bit as the wife doesn't work. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on a few things:

1. How much are you willing to spend on a 9/10 year girl to train for soccer?
2. How passionate is she about playing at this age?
3. How far does your wife or you want to drive to bring her to training 2-3 times a week.
4. Does she want to play with her friends or is she open to playing with new kids?

After you answered those things scout out the above mentioned clubs as well as local ones nearby before actually committing her to a program. IMO its all about development (passing, trapping, understanding space, movement without th ball, playing with your head up,) and not every coach/trainer is good at teaching young players fundamentals of the game no matter what the name of the club out front says. Do your research.

Agreed....also, don't feel pressure to get into a top club at this age if you are uncertain. It's not a "now or never" situation, especially at this age. If your daughter has the drive (and skills) as she gets older, those clubs will take her. Flip side, if she makes a top club now, don't forget that every year she is trying out again, and if more talented players come along, there is no guarantee that the club will keep her.

Most importantly, make sure she is truly passionate about playing, and is OK with the additional commitments of top clubs. For every great player story that comes out of those clubs (and they do produce some really good players) there are also kids who get overwhelmed with the process, and lose their love for the game because of it.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Does anyone know what the major difference between LIJSL divisions, NYCSL divisions, and this EDP I saw recently? Do they play each other at any point or are they totally seperate? I see that both LIJSL and NYCSL both have different divisions. Are they comparable, talent wise? Is one much better?

Don't get to wrapped up around the different divisions at her level. As they get older it may or may not make a difference. Just find the right team/coach/trainer. Remember if the player is happy no matter what team, league etc. she will develop and get better.

I agree, don't get in to this. You will get many many opinions, each league is decent enough. If your daughter excels enough and wants to change teams let her take the lead, otherwise, like someone else said. Be sure she is having fun and you and her like the coaches, trainers and teammates. And don't read much in to clubs or leagues that people say are horrible, or are great. Everyone has an opinion, and they are not yours.

At U10 it's premature to be thinking about about EDP, Premier, etc. Basically you should be thinking about regular travel and your two choices on LI are NYCSL travel and LIJSL travel. While the top NYCSL teams are generally stronger than the very top LIJSL teams, unless your kid is an absolute super-star it's really not something to be worried about. Find a nearby program you like and go with it whether they are NYCSL or LIJSL.

Stay away from LIJSL as this is a weaker competition on a whole. Top training is the most important at this age yet playing against good competition is also part of her growth/development. Top 2 divisions in NYCSL seems to be a good starting point.

This is pretty good advice! As your daughter gets older you can investigate more about the alphabet soup of NPL, EDP, ECNL and GDA...most of the teams that play in those leagues start off in NYCSL top 2 divisions.

Everyone has a biased opinion and writes as if they have experienced every league, every club, every Coach, trainer and every team out there. Having been around the youth industrial soccer complex for over 20 years I can tell you this:

There are no "good" or "bad" leagues. Your child has different needs from every other child and a different skill set and personality. Really the emphasis that has been lost is that if it is not "fun" for your child no matter how good the team or club is and no matter what the team's win-loss record is then what is the point? I have seen not so good teams that are close and have formed tight bonds. I have seen great teams that are crushed and rude and nasty to each other when they lose, and everything in between.

There are good clubs that have great teams and that same club may have another team with a horrible human being leading them or a bad coach or bad trainer or bad culture. There are so-so Clubs with good teams and trainers and so on and so forth.

At 9 and 10 years old the important thing is that your child has fun, develops relationships and learns the beautiful game and has positive experiences. A tiny percentage of players play in college and professional opportunities are very slim in this country especially for female players. Just follow your heart and your gut when it comes to finding your daughter a team. You make all sorts of decisions that will affect your daughter's future and the decisions you make regarding soccer will turn out to be the least important in her life. If you make sure what she does with soccer results in fun and good memories then nothing else matters.

Totally - GU10 Albertson's roster is the top headline on all of the soccer websites as we head into the fall season. Hard to believe they were able to put that team together with all of the stars and their proven track records at U8 and U9. I heard they might get zidane to come manage all of the stars personalities, which tends to be the hardest part of coaching a truly elite team of 4th graders and/or Real Madrid.

And if you have $3000 you don't need laying around. Plus about another $2000 for the year of tournaments and travel and food and drinks and susa gear and kits , But if it's soccer you want soccer you will get !!
