A retired high schoolteacher from Holbrook who was an accomplished soccer coach was arrested Friday on a child pornography charge, police said.

An investigation by computer crimes detectives led to evidence that Thomas Bouklas, 64, "was downloading and possessing child pornography via the Internet," Suffolk police said.

Bouklas, who worked at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip from 1969 to 2006, was charged with possessing a sexual performance of a child, officials said.

Among Bouklas' accomplishments as boys soccer coach: 18 Catholic High School Athletic Association league titles, a perfect 18-0 season in 1993 and state CHSAA titles in 1996 and 1998.

He most recently served as the school's assistant girls soccer coach. Those "duties were terminated pending the outcome of the investigation," the Diocese of Rockville Centre said in a statement.

Bouklas is charged with possessing just one image on his computer and "denies any intent to commit any crime," his lawyer Arshad Majid said. "We believe this is a mistake and a misunderstanding," he said.

Bouklas, who voluntarily surrendered, "is a respected professional who has devoted his life to his family, his profession and his community," Majid said.

During his more than 30 years with the school, "there was never an issue of concern that was made known" to the diocese or the school, according to the diocese. In addition to coaching soccer, Bouklas taught English and served as the TV studio coordinator, the diocese said.

The investigation began about five or six months ago, Det. Sgt. Daniel Molloy said. A search warrant was executed in November at Bouklas' Arnold Street home, when computers, hard drives and assorted media were seized, Molloy said. At that time, police notified school officials, he said.

The diocese and the school "are cooperating fully with law enforcement in this matter," the diocese said.

At his arraignment Friday in First District Court, Central Islip, Bouklas denied the charge and was released on his own recognizance. He is due in court March 5.With Bart Jones

Something doesn't add up. If they are done with the forensics on his computer and can only get this guy with one image on him computer, then they screwed that investigation up. I highly doubt this guy was so unlucky that the first time he downloaded an image he got caught. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

I had this almost exact conversation with someone today.

All the police initial need is one instance. They will now go over the hard drive to see if there are more files or not. They can also go through the hard drive to find traces of deleted documents. They can also get a download record from his ISP, Cablevision, Verizon, or whomever.

Even one count has poisoned this coach forever unless he is found not guilty. If he is found not guilty probably the only place you'll read about it will be here.

I am told, but have not confirmed that he was also part of the ENY ODP program.

Wow!! This coach was a top high school coach on long island when i was growing up... A few friends of mine have played on his st johns teams.. I am one who still feels one is innocent until proven guilty and not guilty until proven innocent.. This is something that will follow him around for the rest of his life even if he is found not guilty. What a shame.. I really hope he is innocent. He was a GREAT soccer mind! If hes guilty then a big SHAME ON HIM!

My son went to this man's camps since he was 7 years old. He also went to St John's and was an all american. He had never found this man to be more than proper. Larry is right, the only place you will read about his innocence is here. The media ruins one's reputation until all the facts are known. It is too bad.
I have not been on this forum since the kids went to college, but please do not judge a good man too quickly. Thanks.

Oh [****]! 😂🤣 i played for him! yeah at least 3 dudes went pro, Petke was one but he graduated before me and Chris Wingert and Chris Aloisi played on my squad that went pro! I was on the 98 state champs. I was a squad player, didnt have much 1 on 1 time with the HC just the AC but everything seemed cool. We were a great team, not national champs like 93/94 but damn good. Was he convicted? Hard to find info. He ran the A/V club too... potentially creepy... oh [****] the kid who used to be in charge ended up makin a pedo ID app for concerned parents... 🤔😮
