Severs Disease could be the cause of your athletes heel pain.

Severs Disease, also known as Calcaneal Apophysitis, is a painful foot condition that usually affects active children between 8 and 15 years of age, whose heel bones are actively growing. Active children may often suffer from Severs Disease when they experience sharp, aching pain in their feet, particularly in their heels, which may cause them to change the way they walk or run. A child with a pronated foot (flat foot) or a child with increased weight will have a greater predisposition to this condition.

The main symptom associated with Severs Disease (Calcaneal Apophysitis) is localized pain in the heel of the foot where the achilles tendon and ligaments attach to the heel bone, or calcaneus. The condition is caused by the gastrocnemius muscle pulling on the attachment point of the Achilles tendon on the calcaneal tuberosity. This overpulling of the achilles tendon along with increased stress to the growth plate (where the heel grows from), in combination with overuse are the main culprits that triggers this condition. The injury often is associated with running and jumping activities such as soccer, basketball, and track. However it can occur suddenly in children who do not participate in organized sports. This pain can be especially noticeable when a child walks or runs during any type of sporting or physical activity. Placing pressure on the area may also be extremely painful, particularly during jumping and propulsion.

Initial treatment for Severs Disease should begin with limiting physical activity. Maintaining intense exercise will only cause the pain to worsen and make the condition more severe. Also, treatment for Severs Disease is anti-inflammatory drugs in conjunction with R.I.C.E. therapy, (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation). Unfortunately, many times these alone may prove to be inadequate. The condition, osteochondrosis at the tendon's attachment point on the calcaneal tuberosity, may include microscopic bone chipping, inflammation and tears, and in the most extreme cases, separation of both cartilage and bone from the bone. Wearing supportive heel cups and shoes is also important in order to help keep as much stress off the heel as possible, however supportive shoes alone will not usually be effective in curing the condition.

Orthotic shoe inserts are a good way to treat the symptoms, as well as help eliminate Severs Disease completely. Orthotic devices have had great success in treating children who suffer from Severs Disease, in addition to other painful foot ailments. The orthotics wil correct improper foot position while the child is weight bearing as well as provide some cushioning. Red Bulls Host Chicago Fire on Sat -- Autism Awareness Match

The New York Red Bulls (3-2-0, 6 pts) host the Chicago Fire (1-3-1, 4 pts) on Saturday at Red Bull Arena in the annual Autism Awareness match.

Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. ET with coverage on Univision, UDN, ESPN+ and Red Bulls Radio in English and Spanish on TuneIn.

As part of the event, the Red Bulls will welcome families impacted by autism to Red Bull Arena and donate $3.00 of every ticket purchased to Autism Speaks. The club also runs the Believe Program, an outreach initiative for young athletes with special needs. The program forms part of the Red Bulls' extensive player development system that caters to players at all levels of the sport. The Believe Program is specially designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl who has special needs.

New York Red Bulls Radio goes live at 3 p.m. ET with Countdown to Kickoff, hosted by Matt Harmon alongside Steve Jolley. Ernesto Motta will have the Spanish play-by-play call for the New York Red Bulls Radio and will be live at 3:30 p.m.

At Red Bull Arena, New York has secured all nine potential points in the first three matches of league play. The Red Bulls have outscored their opponents, 10-1, and have not trailed for one second in the first 360 minutes at home. New York continues to support the best home record in MLS since Red Bull Arena opened in 2010, owning the most home wins (87) and points (291).

Even though Bradley Wright-Phillips leads the team in both goals (7) and assists (5) across all competitions, he has had plenty of help from the rest of the team. There have been 13 different goal scorers to account for New York's 21 goals and 14 different players have recorded at least one assist in 2018.

Wright-Phillips has found ways to get his teammates involved and it has helped early. Through the first 11 matches across all competitions, BWP has tallied a team-best five assists, including two in league play that gave him at least one goal and one assist in a match. When Wright-Phillips records at least a goal and an assist in a game in league play or MLS playoffs, New York is 9-0-1 all-time.

New York travels cross country to play LA Galaxy on Saturday, April 28 before their NY derby match against NYCFC on May 5 at Red Bull Arena. The Red Bulls kickoff against the Galaxy at 10:30 p.m. ET with coverage on MSG, MSG Go, ESPN+ and Red Bulls Radio in English on TuneIn.

All-Time Series: Chicago leads, 26-17-12
Series at New York: New York leads, 13-11-3
