Sorry I'm new to this and i'm late to the party, but I just read on the US Soccer website about the YNT U-14 National Team project. Can anyone share any more info other than what has been posted on their website? When are the Central and Eastern mini-camps and where are they going to be held? Have the participants been picked already? Any additional info... thanks

“Coveted 18-34 year olds” is the growth market sweet spot, and with US demographics changing towards soccer watching/playing people you understand why big money is investing.

Moron. It’s trending growth in the most important demographic.

I wouldn’t say 22,00 to 26,000 vs America’s pastime can be considered “pales.” Your total attendance figures must get thrown out for comparison too because the NHL, MLB play much longer schedules.

Only basketball is smaller (17,500) but it's played in smaller stadiums and has many, many more games. Average Bundesliga is 48,000 and EPL 38,000.

If you take total attendance numbers MLS is well below US hockey and even minor league baseball

Major League Baseball 69,625,244
National Hockey League 22,174,362
National Basketball Association 22,124,559
National Football League 17,177,581
Premier League 14,505,999
Bundesliga 13,661,796
Minor League Baseball (AAA) 13,381,926
Major League Soccer 8,552,503

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_attendance_figures_at_domestic_professional_sports_leagues

.

Well, the top 3 leagues there are generating attendence numbers through volume of events. Of course baseball will lead - they have a lot of teams, with a long history, across a season with 81 home games in the regular season. The NHL and NBA also are at 41 home games (RS). So that would make it easier to hit full season attendance #'s.

I think the MLS is trash from a product perspective but it is definitely growing and healthy in terms of the attendance for most teams across the available games.

The stat that matters most is revenue, and that comes from TV. The MLS is growing but tv viewership is still very small. I love soccer but don’t watch the MLS. Maybe the product will improve and that will change, but most Americans won’t watch a lesser league when they’re accustomed to watching the world’s best in other sports. How does that change when the best players in the world don’t play here and you don’t have the revenue to pay them to come? Owners would have to invest and outspend the likes of the Premier League. Don’t see it happening.

Your post is on point. TV is what makes Major League Baseball.

That said, here is a question to ponder. Does the easy availability to sit back in the comfort of your man-cave, or woman-cave to watch a game hurt the the stadium attendance of a MLS game?

I don't know how many of you remember when the NFL many years ago did not allow the televising of games within a club's local market. Here, in our area for example, you could watch any home Giants games. The NFL did that to boost attendance at the games. I dont recall how many seasons this blackout of home games was in effect or what the results were, but do you think the MLS would do the same to build their brand fan base?

Fair point LM. But either with TV or real time people only have so much time and $ to spend on sports entertainment. Most people don't have limitless time and $ so they prioritize. Personally I'd rather watch international matches over MLS with the limited time I have to watch, and I'm a fan of the game. Soccer may never get into the rotation of many Americans who prioritize other sports first

Your point is well taken. Let me also add that going to a Red Bulls game by car is a horror and mass transit from Long Island is not a trip I would make.

Going to an NYCFC game from Long Island is easier if you you use mass transit....and to your point about how much "Executive Time" you have is a big factor...

I read this and all most fell out of my chair! Basically, USSF has taken a page out of the old ODP system...... The old ODP system was a better system on paper but it failed in execution depending on what part of the country you lived in and again the failure was due to money grabs and politics. The local > state > regional > national pathway was a far better system on paper. Well executed in Virginia. Poorly executed in most of the northeast. When I saw the academy program was just a relabeling of the Northeast Regional Premier League, I knew it was doomed to fail. Same clubs and same coaches and for those not around 10 years ago. Most of the clubs that went academy, went down hill afterwards. If you are at an MLS Academy, you have made the right choice and you make have a chance. If you are at a "premier" academy you are game fodder and the wear and tear and the commitment will result in your kid ending up in the same place he would have 15, 20, 30 years ago and that is on a college soccer roster. Is Tony Lepore still around?

US Soccer is a mess because of all the politics and money. It’s too bad for the VERY FEW great players. The only choice for the rest is send your son to Europe so he can sit on the bench like the kid at Liverpool

Sorry. Good luck with your son. Email Tony Lepore or the director of coaching at your club. Just surprised. Anyone remember the old iD2 program?
