What happens at this age on the Island is that these young ladies find other sports that are as fulfilling or more fulfilling than just playing soccer. The Island is getting a lot of these girls who play soccer getting more interested in Lacrosse as well as basketball, etc. Lacrosse has been growing more and more each year and the better athletes are giving it a try.
Athletics kids, no matter what sports they play, will obviously have to make a decision and start focusing on one if they want to play on a travel team. Coaches in all sprots dont want to hear that kids will miss games, practices, tournaments for another sport. Unfortunately, unlike many years ago when we played, soccer season eventaully ended and you could transition into yoor next sport. We only fielded soccer teams in the spring, school ball in fall during the week, no indoor facilities for winter leagues, and did some select team stuff over the summer. Now they play all year round which can do a few things: 1.Burn them out- as they get tired of playing the same sport 12 months out of a year. 2. Interfere with an athlete that likes and is good at more than one sport. 3. When they try to incooporate it all- there is an increase in injury rate at a highly competitive level
from the body overworking and muscles, joints, and ligaments not resting.
