Hi I was wondering how important these college recruiting camps are because my son keeps getting invitations but they are quite expensive? He was invited to Future 250 and Collegiate Soccer Academy. Thank You

My D has played with numerous coaches, including internationally while living abroad, and was consistently chosen by these coaches as captain. her current premier coach adores her. The HS coach gave out awards at the banquet to every kid on varsity (even made up awards..like "funniest on the bench) except for my daughter. SHe had received all ocnference and the coach "lost" the medal somewhere she claims and never gave it to my kid. My D is the first one to pat a kid on her back or compliment them. She is intense and competitive..and sometimes that isnt appreciated. She has been told by the coach she isnt sporstmanlike bec/ she is bummed when they lose. (no tantrums..just a little down). her premier coach said her self-confidence has really changed this winter. Should she still stick with something to learn a life lesson? she wont be chosen captain if she cant even get offensive player of the year on the team despite being the highest scorer (goals and assists) for 2 years straight..so why torture her? I am really torn.
This discussion cuts much more deeply than our discussion board. Please send us a private e-mail with the details covering the school, the coach, and specific situations. BOTN Industries would very much like to take up this discussion to make the right thing happen for your child. Again, please share the specific details with us to pursue your discussion.

College camps which e-mail or postal mail your son without any connection to colleges or coaches that you have written are nothing but fundraisers for the camp organizers. College camps are extremely valuable when you have already established contact with a specific ooach (or multiple coaches) who has (have) expressed specific interest in your player.

BOTN Industries recommends attending a collegiate camp when the head coach or recruiting coach has expressed a specific interest in your child. There should be a strong indication of interest which potentially includes a guaranteed roster spot where the camp serves as an evaluation as to how much funding might be provided. Attending a college camp on the off-chance of being noticed by someone is nothing more than an exercise in burning pictures of Benjamin Franklin.

If your family has not spoken with the college coach at these potential schools and if that coach has not seen your child play at a showcase event, you are just getting a random mailing from a college camp fundraiser. This is actually quite simple : have you exchanged e-mails or phone calls with the head coach or assistant coach from a series of target schools? Your response sounds as if these "invitations" were part of a mass mailing.

Larry and Boardlord I need your input.
My son is a junior and is being recruited by a few different colleges. Some of them have offered scholarship packages and are waiting for my son to respond with a verbal commitment (no deadline though). One of the coaches says once he proposes the scholarship package my son will have 30 days to accept or decline it. Is this common practice?

Truth be told, thirty days to decide is highly generous. Most packages are offered with a time limit that is shorter, typically measured in days or weeks. Typically, untimed awards are academic-based as opposed to athletic-based.

The reason for the time limit is actually quite simple. Each college coach will have a roster of potential recruits that he/she will want to bring to their program. The coach will move down that list, player by player, allocating funds that are available in accordance with NCAA Guidelines and based on already allocated upper classmen awards. If you child decides not to attend that school for any reason, thereby turning down the award, that money can be reallocated and the coach can move onto another potential recruit.

Just as BOTN Industries recommends college coaches to be honest when there is not true interest in a player, we also recommend that players that have eliminated a school from consideration while an athletic scholarship is on the table inform the head coach immediately. This will allow another student-athlete who is potentially waiting on an offer to receive some good news as a result of your decision.

Thanks for the input Boardlord. We are new to all of this as you can see. One of the coaches said he will wait for my son to decide until after the spring season, but now I'm thinking that might not be such a good idea since from what you're saying this coach could decide to spend the athletic money on another player. Is it better to commit earlier then? Also, do coaches sometimes raise their initial offer if they find out another coach/school has made an offer?

Remember that nothing is concrete until you have the official NCAA Paperwork (February Signing Day), but most any coach that makes a dollar offer will stand by their word and the value of the offer. Hence, committing early does not improve your chances to receive the offer granted by the college coach - the verbal offer will be the offer.

As for holding out to play two offers against one another, while this might be an effective job negotiating strategy, BOTN Industries does not recommend this for most players.

Eventually, one school is the top choice; the second school is the second choice. Why would anyone want to attend their second choice for slightly more money ... and why would anyone risk their top choice for a little more money offered by a second choice school? For the small increments which might come your way, this seems like a huge gamble that will set your child into a less than positive start to their collegiate career. Play hard, train hard, and contribute to the collegiate team and additional rewards might come as time moves forward. Better yet, focus on the academic components of your college career and attempt to earn more rewards through that avenue.

Boardlord:
We are clearly looking at D3 schools instead of the D1 programs. While we think our daughter is a very solid player, the reality is she will not be recruited to play at places like UNC or Stanford, and she would rather get into a program where she will play as opposed to just getting a jersey and sitting for 4 years. Also, the rigors of D1 will put that much extra strain on her time which could affect her grades and we see the academics as more important than soccer.
The D3 schools she is looking at are all top NCAA programs and the quality of the soccer is terrific so we see no downside there. I understand that D3 doesn't face the same "early commitment" issues that the D1's do and we are talking about academic money, not athletic. However, at what point do the D3's seek a verbal commitment from the player? Several schools have advised us in general that they want her to be part of the program and play soccer there but have not discussed $ because all college boards were not submitted. Is there a different protocal for the D3's than the other programs as far as when $ is discussed and when a commitment is made?
