He's a sophomore. And they didn't speak at all other than by email. We didn't expect that. Our goal was to express interest and have the coach see him play. We accomplished our objectives and will be in a better position (I hope) to reach out again to this school (and others) at the fall showcases. At a minimum, it was good practice to see how the process works and my son learned what his job is in this process. Good luck to you and your player as well.

But Good Luck to your son.
Unofficial visits in the Spring of your junior year can lead to campus conversations and a very clear indication of interest from both sides. Hopefully, some of our readers have been making their campus tours this past week and next as teams next prepare for PDA and similar showcase events.

Our experience shows that first half senior year is a little late, particularly for Division I schools, but BOTN Industries has several examples of Division II schools that were able to supply excellent opportunities for both male and female players with first half senior year offers.

Great point. Most D1 schools are done by the fall, or have very little money left. However D2 and D3 schools continue the recruitment process right thru the spring.

We did all our visits fall of Junior year. You are allowed to contact a coach by e-mail and set up a visit. This way you get to see the campus and meet the coach or coaching staff and see a game. The visits make a difference. My daughter didnt like certain campuses or care for the coach. Some coaches spent more time, showed us around. This way you continue to invite coaches from schools your child is interested in. At the same time you should be researching the schools academics and major interests to make an all around fit. Most books list the academic competitive scale. Example: Higly competitive, Most competitive, very, less. My daughter would not consider a school that was not at least very competitive.

Earlier someone mentioned tournaments to go to. Surf cup is not that great. Most coaches are getting ready for their season mid summer and there are alot of west coast coaches there. Jefferson Cup is better and cheaper.

My daughter has been to Surf Cup several times, with ODP and her club team. Its a very good tournament. Yes, there are many west coast , midwest, sothtern and plenty of east coast schools there.
Your child will play alot of west coast teams.
The west caost team play alittle differnt than the usual east coast teams so it a good indicator of how your child or team can adjust and play.
The weather is always great and the fields are beautiful.
Why does this matter? Because it almost ensures you be showing your best side unlike the unpredictable weather and sometimes horrible field or field conditions at Jefferson.
Many people make a mini vacation out of Surf too. Lots to do and see and NO TIME OFF FROM SCHOOL!

Having taught high school for 35 years, and engaged in countless college conversations with students, many of whom I have stayed in touch with into their 30s and 40s, I've come to realize one important reality: Whether one chooses a state or private school, taking advantage of the opportunities offered at the college is a huge part of the formula for success.

Getting a 3.4 GPA at Hofstra, a 3.6 at Stony Brook, or a 3.1 at University of Maryland will ultimately have no effect on the rest of your life. Dozens of other life decisions play a larger role in the "rest of your life." Marital, financial, family and career decisions will likely be more important than the college you attend.

A student's success in college is derived primarily from the student himself, his work ethic and habits, his involvement in its programs and opportunities, and how much he puts into the four years. Do well wherever you go to college, learn good decision-making skills, and you're on the right track to have a very successful "rest of your life."

I want to Thank You Powderfinger for posting this article. I had both my children read it and we had a big discussion of what it means to both me and them.

Your club team will have more exposure than the state team.

Recruitment at State ODP events is significantly less a focal point than competitive club and premier events. One reason is that the number of teams to see at a State/Regional ODP event is smaller and schools with limited budgets might not prefer this type of ODP event over a broader showcase. Larger colleges with bigger recruitment budgets will attend events like ODP scrambles. The truth is that as the players get older, they will spend more time with their premier teams in these showcasing formats.

Given that premier teams are focused on the most competitive showcases and that is where most college showcasing is done, the answer would be yes. Many Long Island boys and girls follow this exact path.

I am confused. I thought there was NO contact allowed between coach and player during their sophomore year EVEN emails. My daughter is a sophomore and has sent her profile and information to several schools she is interested in. We didn't think the coaches were allowed to email back to her so we didn't think it strange that she didn't hear anything back from the coaches. Are coaches allowed to communicate with sophomores by email (D1 and D2 schools) or not????
