Does this really have any relevance? It is only a measure of how well the trainers know the refs. Proud to be associated with a team that got less than 200 points.

The points are really a joke in some cases. I know in my sons division the point spread between top team and bottom team is tremendous. We played both and there was no difference. In sportsmanship. The funniest thing is one of the biggest point getters was a team that the coach was red carded and suspended for a few games for cursing at the ref. If this is true Great example for the kids.

Utter nonsense and an insult to referees and coaches and trainers.

Factually incorrect and someone is not telling the truth. When a team gets a Red card (Coach or Player) it automatically gives them a zero out of 45 maximum points for that game and almost certainly knocks them immediately out of contention for a Sportmanship award or chevron. That would be quite a deficit to overcome and still win a Sportmanship Award and is quite improbable if not impossible.

Sorry but in this case it is true. check u17 boys. This team didn't win the award but was pretty close to top point team. Maybe this division had a lot of bad sportsmanship. Or maybe the points are off. All I know is that when we played them he seemed to throw his weight around with our coach and the refs. This is a nice award for the younger kids. They should grade the parents and coaches seperately from the players. quote=LIRef77]

It really means nothing. The vast majority of referees don't even bother submitting the sportsmanship points. The winners are pulled from the asses of the LIJ board each season. Don't put any stock into them.

You are partially correct.

As a coach I always strived for my teams to do well in sposrtsmanship. The goal was to always try and finish near the top. If your team is near the top year after year then you know you are teaching your kids the right thing to play.

The biggest problem with the sportsmanship award is that not all of the refs enter the scores into the system. Many do but some don't. Where you run into issues and anomilies is when a ref doesn't enter a score from a game where a red card was given so that team will not get the 0 points. Instead what will happen is at the end of the season lijsl will total up all of a team's points and then divide it by the number of games that were submitted and then give the average per game points for any missing games. This is how it works. That's why you will sometimes see teams at the top that you feel may not belong there.

Shame on the referees that do not fill out the Sportmanship points for a game. Previously their paycheck a were held up if their scores were not posted. Now we all get paid prior to the gameYou can put some of the blame on them. But there should be an honest straight forward mechanism for insuring that any team that gets a red card gets eliminated from contention automatically without the scores even being counted. When a player or Caoch gets a red card they are required to attend a hearings do they get fined if they lose the hearing. That result insures that the player or Coach sit out the next game. The same mechanism for that should be used to eliminate them from the Sportmanship award since scoring ZERO make it impossible to win. This "mechanism" would eliminate that team's scores from being averaged because a referee did not record Sportsmanship award. The league keeps track of red and yellow cards. How could they allow a red carded team to win this award?

No, SOME referees fill out sportsmanship points, the VAST MAJORITY do NOT! Hell, many referees don't even send in game reports and so get games every weekend!

I'm sure the pay on the field change has thrown a wrench into the scoring. They used to be able to hold the pay hostage until all the paperwork was submitted. With the change there is no way to force the refs to complete

Refs don't send in sportsmanship points or game reports and still get games. There is a massive shortage of decent referees so lisra's hands are tied

Than why even have this award if all refs aren't sending it in?

We've had one game each of the last 3 seasons where a ref didn't show and we either had assistant coaches ref'ing or a mutually agreed upon parent with experience. Pretty much killed any chance of our team getting the award.
